Hiking in the Western U.P.

Black River Harbor

Known for its many waterfalls and well kept hiking trail Black River is a popular hike year round.  With several shorter hikes (1/4 - 3/4 miles) that are all accessible from paved parking lots there is something for everyone here.  If your up for a day hike, you can access the North Country Trial (NCT) at the trail head on the north end of Copper Peak Road and head north along the Black River.  On your 6 mile hike along the river you will pass multiple waterfalls. Want more? Continue on the NCT across the suspension bridge for another 5.8 miles to the edge of Porcupine Mountain Wilderness State Park.

Porcupine Wilderness State Park

With 60,000 acres and just about 35,000 acres of old growth forest Porcupine Mt. Wilderness is the laregest state park in Michigan.  The park hiking system links more then 90 miles that follow along raging waterfalls, rivers and the beautiful Lake Superior shoreline.  The Porkie's have many hidden gems that you will find on any hike you choose.  Some of the more well known attractions include, Lake of the Clouds, the Summit Peak observation tower and the scenic Presque Isle River corridor.  After your hike stop by our friends at **Porcupine Mountains Ski Area** for a 18-hole disc golf course.

Presque Isle River Loop

The Presque Isle River is on the far west end of the Porcupine Wilderness State Park. This hiking trail loop is 2.3 miles that has a series of stunning waterfalls and a bridge to a small island in the river.  **Manabezho Falls** is the largest waterfall on the hike, falling 25 ft the currents are very stong so be sure to stay on the viewing platforms.   Make sure to bring a snack, there is a great view once you make it to the shores of Lake Superior.

O Kun de Kun Falls

One of the more easy going 1.3 mile hikes but also one of the more rewarding in the area.   The trail is very well kept with light elevation change.  If you are looking to get away from crowds and fences this is your stop.  Due to lack of signs on the road this is still a hidden gem in the western UP.  Being the 3rd largest falls in Ontonagon County and one of the very few plunge falls in the entire UP you will not be disapointed once at O Kun de Kun Falls.  You can go behind the falls if you want, but you need to be careful and sure footed. Just a short way further on the trail you will come across a suspension bridge. This trail is part of the North Country Trail so you could keep going for thousands of miles.

Little Girls Point

Located on the shores of the pristine waters of Lake Superior Little Girls Point is a state camp ground with breathtaking camp sites that sit directly off the shore.  Going there for a short 1 mile hike up the shore line will take much longer than you think.  The beatuful lake rocks will have you looking down at your feet most of the time.  If your looking for some night time activities bring a black light and go hunting for Upperlites, a mindblowing rock that glows under UV lights.
